Last Summer our founder Lorenia went on a transformative trip to Ghana. Along with falling in love with the country she fell in love with breathtaking items that represent the culture of Ghana. Going back to her Anthropology roots, she decided to launch her Luni Travels collections with the Ghana trip being the initial one. She hand selected items that range from jewelry, art to home goods with intention to curate a magical collection in Ode to her time in Ghana.

We launch this collection with these beautiful Brass Adrinka Symbol Rings. These symbols have historical and cultural significance that connects us to our ancestors.

Adinkra symbols originate from the Akan people of Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire. They carry rich historical and cultural significance, representing proverbs, values, and concepts. These symbols are traditionally printed on cloth and worn during important ceremonies and events, such as funerals, weddings, and naming ceremonies. Each symbol has its own unique meaning, conveying aspects of life, wisdom, and social values. They serve as a visual language, communicating complex ideas and providing a way to connect with one's heritage and identity.

Sankofa (heart but traditionally represented as a bird):

Traditionally represented by a bird with its head turned backward taking an egg off its back, holds profound historical and cultural significance within the Akan culture of Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire. The symbol is imbued with the concept of "return and fetch it," symbolizing the importance of learning from the past to build a better future.

The heart symbol incorporated into the Sankofa design adds an additional layer of meaning, representing love, compassion, and empathy. It underscores the idea that embracing the past with an open heart enables personal and collective growth. Overall, the Sankofa symbol with a heart embodies the enduring wisdom of the Akan people, reminding us to honor our past, cherish our heritage, and approach the future with love and understanding.

Friendship & Interdependence (Ese Ne Tekrema):

The Adinkra symbol "Ese Ne Tekrema" depicts the teeth of a crocodile and translates to "the teeth and the tongue."

Culturally, this symbol represents the balance between strength and gentleness. The crocodile's teeth symbolize strength, power, and protection, while the tongue represents gentleness, diplomacy, and tact. Together, they convey the idea that one should use both strength and kindness in their interactions with others, finding harmony between assertiveness and compassion.

Historically, "Ese Ne Tekrema" reflects the wisdom of the Akan people in navigating social relationships and resolving conflicts. It encourages individuals to be firm and assertive when necessary, like the teeth of a crocodile, but also to use diplomacy and communication skills, represented by the tongue, to maintain harmony and peace within their communities.

Overall, this symbol serves as a reminder of the importance of balance and moderation in interpersonal interactions, promoting both strength and kindness in relationships.
